Exeter prison
Need information on Exeter Prison? Exeter Prison was built circa 1850. The institute has four residential wings, a type 3 health care facility and a maximum capacity of 533. Exeter Prison receives young offenders and adults committed to prison from the courts of Devon, Cornwall and West Somerset. The institute has implemented many schemes to aid in the rehabilitation of its prisoners. There is employment in several sectors such as, waste management, kitchen, stores and cleaning. Exeter Prison also has a number of facilities to aid in personal development, including education, computer courses, sports and leisure. To help newly received prisoners adjust to Exeter Prison there in a First Night Centre located in the B Wing. This centre makes prisoners aware of the procedures and the opportunities available at the institute. Also present at this section of the facility is a detox unit, operated by healthcare professionals to assist recovering alcoholics/drug users. The correctional facility also works closely with organisations such as the Samaritans to provide help and support. The system encourages prisoners to aid in the rehabilitation process by offering their support to other inmates, one to one or in a group.
Another sector of the institute is the Resettlement Department, which helps identify prisoner's specific individual needs by interviewing prisoners during the induction. The department also interviews inmates toward the end of their sentence to ensure a smooth transition back into society. The Resettlement Department is strongly connected with outside agencies that now have representatives working within the prison. Services such as a short duration drug programme and an Enhanced Thinking Skills course are now available to prisoners through this scheme.
