Inside a prison

Ever wondered what really goes on inside a prison? Life inside a prison is a tiny universe all to itself with its own official rules and regulations, as well as a host of unspoken ones, and its own daily routines and procedures that are aimed at keeping the whole machine running smoothly. The experience of life inside a prison is so different to what happens day to day on the outside, that it's not uncommon for inmates who have served very long sentences to become 'institutionalized', meaning that they have become so accustomed to the way things are done inside a prison that they have actually experience a form of culture shock when they are eventually released. So what is it really like inside a prison? Let's take a look inside to find out.

Most penitentiaries have a reception, which is responsible for monitoring the numbers of the inmates. When an inmate first arrives at a facility, they are strip-searched and issued with a facility jumpsuit. They also receive a medical check up. The actual experience of the accommodation of the facility varies depending on the type of penitentiary it is, and the level of severity of the crime. Cells range from dormitory-style arrangements to individual, remotely operated cells. Correctional facilities are usually separated into wings. The wings will house a particular type of inmate, and will have its own recreational areas, showers and canteen.

Depending on the facility, inmates may have the opportunity to take advantage of educational classes or courses. Some inmates are able to get university education through distance learning. Others can pick up a skill, like painting, or a craft, such as carpentry.

Most facilities have a multi-faith centre, which caters to the spiritual needs of the inmates. There will also be an exercise yard, and often gyms and sports facilities.

Lastly, a kitchen will provide breakfast, lunch and dinner each day. The average cost of these three meals altogether is £1.87 per inmate per day.

If you're interested in getting a closer look, why not make an appointment to visit your local Correctional facility to learn more?
