Prison officers
 Prison officers are primarily involved in supervising inmates in remand centres, correctional institutes and young offenders' institutions. The main duties of prison officers include carrying out security checks and search procedures, assessing inmates and using authorised restraint and physical control procedures where appropriate. Other aspects of prison officers work include providing support for inmates who are vulnerable or liable to harm themselves, helping convicts look at their offending behaviour and advising convicts on welfare problems, and promoting anti-bullying policies. Further responsibilities required of Prison Officers include the supervision of individual inmates, writing reports on those supervised and overseeing the management of sections of a prison.
Key characteristics required of those wanting to pursue a career in such a role would
include being able to gain the trust of inmates, whilst being fair in disputes through
establishing good relations. It is also important to be able to work in a structured
environment where rules and discipline apply: to stay calm, assess a situation and cope
with pressure.The job usually involves 39 hour weeks on a shift pattern that includes nights and weekends. There are opportunities for jobshare.and part-time work. The work is mainly indoors although some outdoor work is necessary such as patrolling the grounds or supervising recreation, which can take place in all weathers. On occasions strenuous effort is required when restraining a prisoner.
Entrants need to pass an interview and other entry assessments regardless
of academic qualifications. On entry you must be aged between eighteen and a half and
fifty seven, and you must be a British or Commonwealth citizen or EU national.
Applicants undergo medical, eyesight and fitness tests during the recruitment process, and if successful applicants are further checked on health, character, reliability and identity.
